Fencing & Shed Installation in Reading

Panel fencing, post replacement, storm repairs & shed assembly

Fencing in Reading takes a battering. The Thames Valley gets its share of wind, and fence panels are usually the first thing to go. I repair and replace fencing across Reading, Caversham, Woodley and the wider Berkshire area — from a single blown panel to a complete boundary fence replacement. I also assemble and install garden sheds, summerhouses and storage buildings.

The most common fencing problems I see are posts that have rotted at the base, panels that have blown out of their channels, and gravel boards that have cracked at ground level. In most cases these can be repaired without replacing the whole fence — which saves money. I'll always tell you honestly whether repair or replacement is the better option for your fence.

⚠️ DIY Fencing Tips — What to Watch Out For

  • Post holes need to be deep enough. A common DIY mistake is underestimating depth. As a rule, one third of the post length should be in the ground — so for a 6ft panel you need an 8ft post with at least 2ft below ground. Too shallow and the first storm takes it out.
  • Spacing between posts must be accurate before you concrete in. Panel widths are fixed — usually 1.83m. If your post spacing is even slightly off, panels won't fit and you'll need to recut or reposition posts that are already set in concrete.
  • All posts must be perfectly vertical AND all the same height. It's not enough for each post to be plumb in isolation — the fence line needs to flow evenly. Use a string line between the end posts to keep heights consistent as you go.

Fencing FAQ

My fence blew down in a storm — can you come quickly?

I try to prioritise storm damage where security or safety is a concern. Send me a WhatsApp photo and let me know it's urgent — I'll do my best to get to you as soon as possible.

Is it better to repair or replace my fence?

It depends on the extent of the damage and the age of the fence. If posts are sound and only panels are damaged, repair is usually cheaper. If posts are rotted at the base, replacement is more cost-effective long term. I'll give you an honest view when I see it.

Do you assemble garden sheds?

Yes — I assemble all types of garden shed, summerhouse and log cabin kits. I can also prepare a level base and ensure the building is properly anchored.

Do you cover all of Reading?

Yes — Reading, Caversham, Woodley, Earley, Tilehurst, Theale, Pangbourne, Shinfield, Henley-on-Thames, Twyford and all surrounding Berkshire villages.
