- Never overtighten hinge screws. Kitchen cabinet hinges go into chipboard or MDF, not solid wood. Overtightening strips the hole and the hinge loses its grip. If a hinge screw is spinning, the hole needs repairing — not just a bigger screw.
- Use the correct screw size for cabinet fittings. Kitchen hardware uses specific screw gauges. Using a screw that's too large will split the cabinet panel. Too small and the fitting won't hold under daily use.
- Poor alignment is almost always a hinge adjustment problem. Most modern kitchen hinges have three-way adjustment — horizontal, vertical and depth. Before replacing a door or a hinge, spend time with the adjustment screws — the door that's catching may just need a quarter turn on one screw.
