TV wall mounting sounds simple until you're standing on a ladder with a 65-inch screen, you've drilled in the wrong place, and you're not entirely sure what's behind the wall. Then I select the right fixing for the substrate, position the bracket at the correct height for your sofa and viewing distance, and discuss cable management before a single hole is made. ⚠️ TV Mounting Tips — What to Watch Out For
- Know your wall substrate before you drill anything. A solid masonry fixing and a plasterboard hollow wall anchor are completely different products. Using the wrong one for a heavy TV is how TVs end up on the floor.
- Plan your cabling before the bracket goes up. Once the TV is mounted it's much harder to route cables neatly. Decide where your cables will run — through the wall, in surface trunking, or dropped behind furniture — before you start.
- TV height matters more than people think. The centre of the screen should typically be at eye level when seated — not at standing head height. Most DIY mounts end up too high, which causes neck strain over time.
- Check for light sources that reflect off the screen. A TV positioned opposite a window or directly under a ceiling light can be unwatchable at certain times of day. It's worth standing in the room at different times before committing to a position.
