⚠️ DIY Plumbing Tips — What to Watch Out For
- Always turn off the mains before replacing any taps. It sounds obvious, but it's the most common mistake — and the most expensive one to clean up.
- Never overtighten a tap on a ceramic or composite sink. Ceramic sinks in particular can crack under excessive pressure. Hand tight, then a small turn with a wrench — that's all it needs.
- A dripping tap isn't always just a worn washer. If the tap seat (the metal surface the washer presses against) has eroded, replacing the washer alone won't fix it — the tap will keep dripping within weeks. The seat needs to be reground or the tap replaced entirely.
- Never overtighten flexible tap connectors. Those braided hoses can seem solid but overtightening cracks the olive or fitting and creates a slow weep that's often invisible until it's caused damage below.
